A couple of weeks ago, we were having a hard week - lets say, mom was having a hard week (do you ever adjust to having a 2 year old???) and so on Thursday of that week, August kept talking about going to the beach. And I kept saying "maybe we can go sometime" - you know how mom's can be so vague!!! (didn't you hate that as a kid???? and yet I find myself doing it all the time!!!)
But then, I decided, it wouldn't hurt to rearrange my schedule and take the kids to the beach. It's only an hour away!!! Of course, the disclaimer here is that the Oregon beach is NOT like the San Diego beach. It's probably about 40 degrees colder and the water is about 20 degrees! It's cold! (ok so maybe I'm exaggerating (sp), but it sure is not surfing weather!) But it was going to be sunny with almost no wind and so it would be absolutely a perfect day to go. So, I did just that - rearranged everything I had planned that day and mentally got myself ready to take the kids to the beach the next day.
Well I must say, it was beautiful. And we spent about an hour on the beach until.........you guessed it! We were playing a little game, August and I (Grace was trying to sleep - ha ha!) and the game was - don't let the waves get us! However, we learned that you have to run frontwards - NOT backwards, because disaster's can occur if you run backwards. And it did - poor August was trying to run, but was backwards and his feet went out from under him and he fell flat in about 4 inches of freezing cold ocean water! And I (trying desperately not to laugh) was working at trying to get him back on two feet without getting too much sand everywhere. (Ha Ha to that - we're at the beach! Sand get's everywhere - including places we won't talk about!)
I had come prepared (sort of) like every good mom should. Complete outfit for Grace - in case she has a blow out. And jeans and "chonies" for August in case his PANTS get wet - right? Well I didn't count on his entire body getting wet, so I didn't have an extra shirt or jacket/sweatshirt for him to wear. So.....we HAD to go to the outlet mall that is right there in town (Oh how sad to have to go shopping) and buy him a new shirt, which ended up being 6 new shirts (3 that were only $2.00) and 2 pairs of shorts! He needed some summer clothes anyway, so what a good excuse. Oh yeah - a little add in - it took me an hour to get his clothes off at the beach and into new jeans and chonies and shoes and socks and in the midst of that - Grace decided she needed to eat and THEN have a blowout! It's always a fun day with 2 under 2!

It was absolutely beautiful~
Random b/w picture!
Poor Grace - I think she ended up with the raw end of the deal that day!

This was AFTER he fell in the water. The video is only sort of ok - the volume is not great, but you can see the drips on his face!
So after we shopped for a little bit, we needed to eat something so I decided to try the little Japanese restaurant there in the mall called Momiji's. Sushi and a bento plate for me and August to share and tempura shrimp for August to eat on his own!
All in all - it was a good day for August and me (and Grace). This day was especially for him and I think he had fun. Too bad he probably won't remember it! But it's written in my heart and mind for forever and it will be one of those stories I can share with him about when he was little!

My happy boy! And thankfully - he fell asleep on the way home while I talked to Auntie Sarah!!!!!

i love days like this! Days where you let go of expectations and allow yourself to go with the flow, days where you end up being able to enjoy the wonderful things about 2 year olds instead of being frustrated by the not so wonderful things. So wonderful that you captured it here - now you'll always remember it, and he'll get the chance to look at the proof someday :)
What a wonderful memory...you just ventured out and did something out of the norm. :) Glad you made it through with smiles and good feelings and some photos to show him later!
