Baby Bird

So there was something sort of neat that happened this spring.  It was cool to capture in pictures I guess, but it ended up sort of sad.  Anyway - we have this tree in our yard that is home to a set of robins who migrate their way back to that tree every year.  They use the same nest and usually we see a couple of babies after a few weeks of them hanging around.

So this spring, there were three babies and we were just being able to see the parents starting to feed them.  You would see their little beaks wide open every time the parents would come by.  Well - we're not quite sure what happened - maybe another bird tried to disrupt the nest or something but one morning I went out and this is what I saw.......

Yep - one little lone baby all by itself, nestled next to the logs that border our grass and directly underneath where the nest is in the tree.  Well the thought was - maybe we can put the bird back up there.  But......the nest is about 15 or more feet in the air.  Not happening.  Next we thought maybe we should try to put it in a box or something.  Nope - read on the internet to just leave him be.  So we did.  And this is what I caught about 4 hours later.  (I was worried the mom and dad wouldn't come back by, but they did.)

So this was on a Monday.  And that went on for about two days.  By around Wednesday night/Thursday morning, we woke up and this is what we saw......

He had started to walk and had made his way up towards the house.  Cool, huh?  Well it was cool except we didn't see the mom and dad very much.......hence the next picture.......he doesn't look too good

And by the afternoon he was gone.  So the process of life goes....interesting to see the process, but sort of sad to see the ending too.  At any rate, we "disposed" of it before the kids woke up from their nap and told them what happened.

Glad to say it wasn't too hard to help them understand, just so so thankful it was a bird and not something or someone else.

That's kind of neat that you caught it on film. A sad lesson for the kids, but neat that they saw it firsthand.

Lessons like these just aren't the same when learned from a video in a classroom.
